01/2024 - Art Classes at St. Jacob’s

With the turn of the new year, Ruza and I were given the opportunity to head and close St. Jacob’s first-ever program of art sessions.

The first class was a paint-along workshop where we re-created one of my more impressionistic landscape pieces in acrylic. I was happy to teach the participants different layering and brush stroke techniques, and assured them that art was a process—a process that doesn’t look like much until the very end.

The fruits of our labour

Our second session was an introduction to printmaking. We provided our students with pre-sketched, partially-carved lino plates and guided them through the carving process, inking, aligning their registration, and incorporating watercolour media into their designs. The results were fantastic! The examples below are only a handful that were able to photograph. The students really enjoyed customizing and designing their prints.

Also, the pink landscape in the square composition greatly resembles Lisa Frank’s aesthetic, according to Ruza. No-one understood that reference in class.
